Stardew Valley Hardwood Guide: Sources & Farm Route

For most saves, the most dependable Stardew Valley hardwood route begins with the Secret Woods: six large stumps return there each day and provide 12 pieces once you can break them. Your farm map can add another daily stop, while large logs, Mahogany trees, and late-game sources fill different gaps. This guide compares each source, explains the axe thresholds, and turns them into a route that fits your current progress instead of assuming you already have every upgrade.

Quick answer

Upgrade to a Copper Axe for large stumps, then visit the Secret Woods for 12 Hardwood per day. A Forest Farm adds up to 16 daily from its own stumps; Four Corners adds 2. A Steel Axe is needed for large logs, which are useful early but do not provide the same daily respawn loop. For a longer-term reserve, add Mahogany trees when you can grow or reach them.

START WITH THE ROUTE

How to get hardwood in Stardew Valley: compare the reliable sources

Hardwood is not interchangeable with ordinary Wood, and the best source changes as your save develops. A strong Stardew Valley hardwood plan separates repeatable daily stumps from one-time obstacles and slower tree supply. Use the daily column to plan a routine, then treat occasional drops as a bonus rather than a promise.

The dependable daily baseline: once unlocked, the Secret Woods alone provides 12 Hardwood each day. Farm-map stumps are extra; they do not replace the Secret Woods route unless your map changes which locations you can reach.

Secret Woods: the standard-map loop

Six Large Stumps respawn daily in the Secret Woods for 12 Hardwood. The entrance log needs a Steel Axe or better, but you only clear it once; the daily stumps need a Copper Axe or better.

Farm-map stumps: extra daily yield

Forest Farm has eight recurring stumps on the left side for 16 Hardwood per day. Four Corners has one in the upper-left for 2. Those yields apply only to those maps.

Trees and occasional sources

Large Logs need Steel and are not a daily loop. Mahogany Trees work with any axe; wild trees on Ginger Island regrow. Mine crates, a Woodskip Pond, and selected rewards can add Hardwood, but their timing is less predictable.

UNLOCK THE RIGHT OBSTACLE

Axe upgrades decide which hardwood sources you can reach

Two obstacles have different upgrade thresholds. Mahogany Trees are more flexible and can be chopped with any axe. Match the next Stardew Valley hardwood run to the tool you already have.

  1. 1

    Copper Axe for stumps

A Copper Axe or better breaks Large Stumps. This unlocks the Secret Woods and the recurring stump groups on Forest Farm or Four Corners.

  2. 2

    Steel Axe for logs

Large Logs need a Steel Axe or better, including the log blocking the Secret Woods entrance. A Copper Axe does not replace this requirement.

  3. 3

Check the obstacle before a trip

Stumps use the lower threshold, so do not wait for Steel before collecting from an available stump route. Check the source and tool columns first.

  4. 4

    Any axe for Mahogany

Mahogany Trees can be chopped with any axe. Their supply is useful when available, but the daily stump circuit is easier to predict.

A REPEATABLE CIRCUIT

A practical daily Secret Woods hardwood route

Once the entrance is open and your axe can break Large Stumps, this is a compact Stardew Valley hardwood routine for a standard farm. It focuses on the source with a known daily yield, then leaves the rest of the day free for mining, quests, or farm work.

  1. 1

    Bring the right axe

Use a Copper Axe or better for the stumps. If the entrance is still blocked, a Steel Axe or better clears that log once.

  2. 2

    Travel through Cindersap Forest

Follow the northwest route to the Secret Woods. After the entrance is open, this is a short daily detour.

  3. 3

    Clear all six stumps

Each stump gives 2 Hardwood, so a complete circuit returns 12. Check the edge of the clearing before leaving.

  4. 4

Add your map stop and store the yield

Forest Farm adds eight stumps for 16; Four Corners adds one for 2. Keep the harvest in a reserve chest before starting optional recipes.

Expected standard-map result: 12 Hardwood per day from Secret Woods once unlocked. The Forest Farm and Four Corners figures are additional map-specific yields, not a bonus available on every farm.

BUILD BEYOND THE DAILY STUMPS

Make Mahogany a long-term hardwood reserve

Daily stumps are the predictable core. Mahogany Trees can be cut with any axe, and wild trees on Ginger Island regrow after harvest. Mahogany Seeds can also support a planted supply once you have room to grow trees.

A new sapling is not an immediate quest solution. Keep the Secret Woods circuit running while a grove matures, leave a clear path to each tree, and store seeds separately so they are not spent on a recipe by mistake.

  1. 1

    Separate seeds from the reserve

Keep planting stock in a labeled chest so it is not spent accidentally.

  2. 2

    Choose accessible ground

Plant where you can revisit the trees without crossing a busy crop route.

  3. 3

    Count only mature supply

Keep collecting daily stumps while saplings grow, then save seeds for replacement.

SPEND WITH A PLAN

Reserve hardwood for the next milestone

Treat Stardew Valley hardwood as a project reserve: it appears in important recipes, upgrades, and quests, so a large stack can disappear faster than expected. Decide what must be completed next, keep that amount separate, and use anything above the reserve for optional crafting.

Protect major projects

Repairing the beach boat costs 200 Hardwood. Reserve that amount before optional fences, machines, or decoration.

Check recipes first

Several machines and late-game recipes use Hardwood. Confirm the recipe in your current game before spending a shared stack.

Separate the stacks

Store project Hardwood apart from seeds and optional crafting so daily collection does not disappear unnoticed.

WHEN THE ROUTE FAILS

Common hardwood problems and the fix

Most missed Hardwood comes from a tool mismatch, a map-specific yield being applied to the wrong farm, or counting a one-time obstacle as a recurring source. Check the cause before spending a day on another route.

ProblemWhat to check
A stump will not breakUse a Copper Axe or better; a basic axe is not enough.
The Secret Woods entrance is still blockedBring a Steel Axe or better to clear the Large Log. After opening it, return to the stumps on later days.
The farm yields do not match the tableThe 16 and 2 daily figures belong to Forest Farm and Four Corners. A standard farm does not gain either map-specific stump group.
A cleared log did not come backLarge Logs are not the daily loop. Use recurring stumps or Mahogany Trees for future supply.
You are short after craftingCheck the next project first and store its reserve apart from seeds and optional recipes.
