Stardew Valley Mastery Guide: Best Order and All Rewards
The mastery system starts after you reach level 10 in all five skills. From then on, ordinary Farming, Mining, Foraging, Fishing, and Combat experience feeds one shared mastery bar. Each completed bar grants a point that opens one pillar in the Mastery Cave, so the real decision is not whether you can get every reward, but which reward will improve your current save first.
Choose Farming first when you want the widest everyday benefit: the Iridium Scythe makes crop harvesting faster and its other unlocks support long-term production. Choose Fishing first for treasure-focused runs, Combat first for Skull Cavern progression, or Mining/Foraging first when their recipes directly match your current resource plan. All five can eventually be claimed.
How to unlock the Mastery Cave
Mastery is an endgame progression layer, not a replacement for the normal skill levels. You must finish the basic five-skill journey first. Once every skill reaches level 10, the sealed door in southeast Cindersap Forest can be opened and the shared mastery experience bar appears in the Skills menu.
Reach five level-10 skills
Farming, Mining, Foraging, Fishing, and Combat must all be level 10. A profession choice at levels 5 and 10 does not change cave access.
Visit southeast Cindersap Forest
The Mastery Cave sits below Leah's Cottage. The door remains locked until the five skill requirements are complete.
Keep earning ordinary skill XP
After the cave unlocks, the same activities that trained your skills now fill one combined mastery bar instead of creating level 11.
How mastery points and experience work
The five pillars do not have separate experience pools. Any eligible skill experience contributes to the same bar, which means you can earn a Fishing reward while gaining most of the required experience through Farming or Mining. Each new point costs more than the previous one, for a total of 100,000 mastery experience to claim all five rewards.
| Point earned | XP for this point | Cumulative XP |
|---|---|---|
| 1st mastery | 10,000 | 10,000 |
| 2nd mastery | 15,000 | 25,000 |
| 3rd mastery | 20,000 | 45,000 |
| 4th mastery | 25,000 | 70,000 |
| 5th mastery | 30,000 | 100,000 |
You spend a mastery point on a pillar, but you do not lose skill levels or reset the shared experience already accumulated toward future milestones.

Every Stardew Valley mastery reward compared
Each pillar unlocks a package rather than one isolated item. The strongest choice depends on what you repeatedly do: harvesting large fields, processing ore, gathering wild materials, opening fishing treasure, or fighting in dangerous mines.
| Mastery | Main unlocks | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Farming | Iridium Scythe, Statue of Blessings recipe, and access to Golden Animal Crackers | Large crop fields, animal production, and general farm efficiency |
| Mining | Statue of the Dwarf King recipe, Heavy Furnace recipe, and improved gem yield from gem-bearing rocks | Ore processing, cavern runs, and players who burn through coal and machines |
| Foraging | Mystic Tree Seed recipe, Treasure Totem recipe, and Golden Mystery Boxes entering the reward pool | Wood, forage, artifact hunting, and long-term Mystic Syrup production |
| Fishing | Advanced Iridium Rod, Challenge Bait recipe, and Golden Fishing Treasure Chests | Treasure routes, difficult fish, and players who want two tackle slots |
| Combat | Anvil recipe, Mini-Forge recipe, and trinkets with a dedicated trinket slot | Skull Cavern, dangerous mines, weapon customization, and combat-heavy saves |
Best mastery order by playstyle
There is no permanent mistake because every pillar can be opened. A good order simply puts immediate utility ahead of rewards you will not use yet. Start from the bottleneck in your save rather than copying a universal tier list.
Balanced farm: Farming first
Farming helps the widest set of routine tasks. The Iridium Scythe is especially noticeable on large recurring crops, while the Statue of Blessings adds a daily benefit.
Skull Cavern focus: Combat or Mining
Combat gives trinkets, on-farm forging, and rerolls through the Anvil. Mining improves processing and daily mining bonuses. Pick the one blocking your current runs.
Fishing economy: Fishing first
The Advanced Iridium Rod supports two tackle slots. It is a strong early mastery when treasure chests, difficult catches, or fishing income still matter in your save.
Resource farm: Foraging first
Foraging has slower-burn value through Mystic Trees and Treasure Totems. Claim it early only if those materials or artifact spots are already part of your plan.

How to earn mastery experience efficiently
The fastest method is usually the activity you can repeat at scale without interrupting the rest of your farm. Mastery experience rewards efficient late-game routines more than one obscure exploit.
- 1
Harvest and process a planned crop cycle
Large fields provide steady Farming experience, especially when you already have sprinklers, Junimo Huts, and a predictable replanting schedule. Do not grow low-value crops only for XP if the extra labor hurts your main goals.
- 2
Combine mining and combat in deep runs
Skull Cavern and dangerous-mine trips can produce Mining and Combat experience together. Bring food, staircases, bombs, and an exit time so the run remains profitable instead of becoming an expensive XP grind.
- 3
Use Fishing or Foraging as flexible fillers
Fishing can be repeated on demand, while tree chopping and seasonal forage fit between farm jobs. Mixing activities is often less tiring and still feeds the same shared bar.
- 4
Delay a pillar only when its benefit is genuinely idle
A reward that looks strong on paper is weak if you will not use it for several in-game weeks. Claim the package that changes tomorrow's plan, then let normal play earn the next point.
Mastery order is a timing choice, not a locked build. You do not choose one skill and lose the other four. Avoid hoarding an available point for a perfect answer when one pillar would immediately save time or unlock a recipe you can use now.
Stardew Valley mastery FAQ
How do you unlock mastery in Stardew Valley?
Reach level 10 in all five skills, then visit the Mastery Cave in southeast Cindersap Forest. Further skill experience fills the shared mastery bar.
What mastery should I get first?
Farming is the safest general recommendation, but Fishing is better for a treasure-and-catch phase, Combat or Mining for cavern progression, and Foraging for Mystic Tree or artifact plans.
Can you get all mastery rewards?
Yes. Five completed mastery milestones provide five points, enough to claim every pillar. Your first choice only changes the order of access.
What counts toward mastery experience?
Post-level-10 experience from Farming, Mining, Foraging, Fishing, and Combat feeds one shared bar. The activity does not have to match the reward you plan to claim.
Does the Mastery Cave work on older saves?
A compatible save can use the system after it meets the five level-10 requirement. Back up important saves before major game updates or mod changes, as you would for any late-game progression.
